Introduction: A look into management

A view into Fayol's theory of Management

Henri Fayol was a French management theorist whose theories in management and organization of labor were widely influential in the beginning of the 20th century. Fayol's scientific approach to work focused on building a better, stronger, faster and more productive team through physical elements. However, in today's society this principle can actually hurt an organization if it is not used correctly and accurately.

14 Principles of management: Division of Work

Working at the Alumni Affairs as an intern is a perfect example into distinguishing between this principle being used back then and now. The Alumni Affairs collaborate with their colleagues  in development , communications  and advancement  services to maximize resource decisions regarding alumni engagement. The first principle Fayol mentions is "Division of Work" where the course of tasks are assigned to, and completed by, a group of workers in order to increase efficiency. This means that for every one job, there can be any number of processes that must occur for the job to be complete. In this case, the alumni affairs could really use this principle to better there organization. This principle remains the same even now then it did back then. The only thing, however, in today's environment, where change takes place very rapidly, application of specialization in designing workers' jobs in organizations in the US is not as efficient and productive as it was then. But, because the alumni association is subject to engaging with customers and volunteer management, it is hard to see this principle initiated in this type of work. Rather, this principle will benefit the alumni affairs in several ways. There are many advantages of division of labor such as the right person in the right job where every worker is assigned the task for which he is best suited. This helps to provide, opportunities for the best utilization of natural talents as a person performs the job which he likes he gets pleasure in work. Another advantage is how this not only increases the quantity of work it also improves the quality of production. Better and modern machines and equipment are used. Better quality products help to increase the goodwill and profits of business. Division of labor helps to avoid waste of time and effort caused by changes from one type of work to another. The worker does not have to shift from one process to another.
